If your family has outgrown five seats, the search for a 7-seater can feel overwhelming — and expensive. A new seven-seat SUV in Ireland starts around €46,000–€50,000 (the Peugeot 5008 from about €46,495, the Nissan X-Trail from about €49,495). The good news: on the used market you can get a genuine, comfortable, three-row car for a fraction of that, and there's far more choice than most buyers realise.
This guide cuts through it. We'll cover the difference between a "real" 7-seater and a token third row, the best models to look for in Ireland in 2026, what they cost used, and what they cost to run. This is one of four guides in our family-car cluster — start there if you're not sure a 7-seater is the right shape for you at all.
"Occasional" vs "everyday" third row — the key distinction
Not all 7-seaters are equal. Two very different cars hide under the same label:
- Occasional 7-seaters — mid-size SUVs (Nissan X-Trail, Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Santa Fe) where the third row folds flat into the boot and is best for kids or short trips. Perfect for the school car-pool and the odd extra passenger.
- Everyday 7-seaters — van-based MPVs (Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Rifter, Ford Galaxy, VW Sharan, SEAT Alhambra) where the third row is genuinely usable by adults, the doors often slide, and access is easy.
The rule of thumb: if you'll use all seven seats most days, buy an MPV; if it's a few times a month, an SUV with a folding third row gives you a better all-round car.

What does a used 7-seater cost to run in Ireland?
Bigger car, bigger running cost — but less than you might fear, and it depends heavily on the engine:
- Motor tax: a typical diesel 7-seat SUV (around 130–150g/km CO₂ if registered since 2021) sits in the €200–€270/year range; older, higher-emission models cost more. A petrol-hybrid option, where available, lands lower.
- Fuel: diesel still makes sense for high-mileage seven-seat families because of economy on long runs — but check the car has a full service history, as diesels punish neglect.
- NCT: €60, due every two years once the car is four years old.
- Insurance: larger cars can cost a little more to insure, but family-friendly MPVs and SUVs are rarely in the highest groups.

Five things to check before you buy a used 7-seater
- Try the third row yourself — fold it up, climb in, and put a car seat where it'll actually go. "Seven seats" on the spec sheet means nothing until you've sat in row three.
- Count the ISOFIX points and confirm they're in the seats you'll use. Many SUVs only have ISOFIX in the middle row.
- Check the boot with all seven seats up — on some SUVs there's barely room for a few schoolbags.
- On diesels, insist on a full service history and look for evidence the DPF (diesel particulate filter) is healthy — short urban journeys clog them.
- Walk the full family checklist before you commit: Family Car Buying Checklist.
Estate as an alternative — don't overlook it
If you mostly need boot space rather than a seventh seat, a large estate often beats a 7-seater: cheaper to buy, cheaper to tax, and more car-park-friendly. It's worth a look before you commit — see Best Estate Cars in Ireland 2026.
