What pushes the price up?
If your quote comes back well above €1,600, one of these is usually the reason. Ask the installer which.
- Long cable run. Every extra 5 m beyond the first 10 adds roughly €80–€120. A run under a driveway, through a garage or around a terrace to the front adds €300–€600. Trenching is the single most common surprise.
- Older fuse board. If the consumer unit has no spare way, no RCD protection, or can't safely take a 32 A circuit, it needs upgrading first. Quotes range from €300–€600 for a partial upgrade to €800–€1,400 for a full replacement.

How the €300 SEAI Home Charger Grant works, step by step
The SEAI Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant is worth up to €300 towards the purchase and installation of a home charger unit, per SEAI's scheme page and Citizens Information (page edited 10 August 2026). It's the grant most buyers forget, because the dealer doesn't administer it. Here's the sequence, taken from SEAI's own eligibility criteria.
- Check you qualify. The car must park on off-street parking associated with your home (driveway, garage or an allocated space) and the charger must connect back to your home's supply. SEAI uses your MPRN, the 11-digit number on your electricity bill, to confirm the address. You don't need to own an EV yet: SEAI says the grant is open "whether they own an electric vehicle or not", so a used EV or a plug-in hybrid is fine, unlike the €3,500 purchase grant.
- Pick a registered charger and a registered installer. The charger must be a smart unit on SEAI's Smart Charger Register, and the work must be done by a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor (REC). Installing a new circuit in a home is restricted electrical work under S.I. No. 264 of 2013, and Safe Electric says anyone doing it unregistered "will be subject to prosecution". Check the installer on safeelectric.ie before you book.
- Apply first, then wait for the Letter of Offer. Applications go through SEAI's online portal, or a registered third-party installer can apply on your behalf. SEAI is blunt about timing: "Do not commence any work before the start date on your Letter of Offer otherwise this expenditure will be deemed ineligible." Don't let the van arrive before the offer is in your inbox.
- Install within six months, then claim. The offer is valid for six months. The installer fits the charger and issues the Completion Certificate (Cert 3) and test record; you return SEAI's Payment Request Form with those, a photo of the installation and the electrician's invoice, and SEAI pays the grant. Where the installer applied as a third party, it's usually netted off your bill instead.
- One per property. SEAI won't pay on a property that has already had a home-charger grant, or that got the free ESB ecars home charger before 2018.
Apartments: SEAI runs a separate Apartment Charging Grant for developments without private off-street parking, such as apartments, duplexes and mixed developments. It's applied for at building level by the owners' management company (or a build-to-rent manager, local authority or approved housing body), which must partner with an SEAI-registered Charge Point Operator; it covers 80% of eligible costs for an owners' management company (60% for build-to-rent, 90% for a local authority or housing body). This is why the charger pays for itself. The figures below assume a family EV using 16–18.5 kWh per 100 km (18.5 is the mixed-Irish-driving figure Autoza's running-costs calculator uses) and a petrol car using 6.5 litres per 100 km, the calculator's assumption too; adjust for your own car. Two things jump out. First, a home charger on an EV tariff is roughly five to eight times cheaper per kilometre than either public charging or petrol, and petrol is about to get dearer again: AA Ireland says the phased restoration of excise adds 9c a litre to petrol in September, 8c in October and 5c in each of November and December. Second, if you only ever charge at home during the day, you've thrown away most of the saving; the tariff matters as much as the charger. Note the EV plans carry a higher standing charge (Bord Gáis quotes €364.89 a year on its EV plan against €244.76 on its standard smart plan, urban rates), so they suit people who actually drive.

Do you even need a home charger?
Honest answer: not always. Here's when to hold off.
- You do under 40 km a day and have a driveway. A granny cable (the 3-pin lead most EVs come with) charges at about 2.3 kW and puts in roughly 10–12 km of range per hour, so an overnight plug-in covers a short commute; a 7 kW wallbox adds 40–50 km an hour. Use a dedicated outdoor socket, not an extension reel, and be aware a two-hour boost window only puts about 4–5 kWh (25–30 km) into the car through a 3-pin socket.
- Your workplace has chargers. Free or cheap daytime charging at work beats any home tariff. Check whether the spaces are actually available before you rely on them.
- You rent and the landlord says no. A charger is a fixture, so you need the landlord's permission. SEAI's scheme is open to residents, not just owners, and a charger "can also be used at rented accommodation", but the property can only ever get the grant once, so ask before assuming.
- You're on the fence about the car. If you're still comparing a 2019 Leaf with a 2022 ID.3, buy the car first.
