How the check works
The tool finds cars on Autoza that match yours (the same make and model, a similar year and similar mileage), takes the spread of the prices dealers are asking, and places your advert's price inside or outside it. Because every comparison is asking price against asking price, it answers one question: is this advert priced in line with similar adverts?
It does not say what a car is worth or what the seller will accept, and it cannot see condition, history or the NCT. Selling your own car instead? Use the free car valuation. To see median asking prices by model, open the used car price index.
Before you pay
A fair price is where checking starts. Work out when the NCT is due with the NCT due date calculator, run through the used car buying checklist and follow our guide to buying a used car in Ireland. Budgeting for the monthly cost? The affordability calculator works backwards from what you can spend.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a used car price is fair in Ireland?+
Compare the asking price with what dealers ask for similar cars: the same make and model, a similar year and a similar mileage. This tool does that for you using live Autoza listings. A price inside the range is in line with the market, a price well below it needs an explanation, and a price above it is worth negotiating or comparing.
What does the comparable range mean?+
It is the spread of prices Irish dealers are asking on Autoza for cars like the one you entered, adjusted for mileage. It is an asking-price range, not a record of what cars sold for, so it describes the advertised market rather than a final deal.
Does a fair price mean it is a good car?+
No. A fair price only tells you the money is in line with similar adverts. It cannot see damage, service history, outstanding finance, mileage tampering or the NCT date. Get a history report, check the NCT, and inspect the car before you pay.
Why does it say a price is well below the market?+
Because it is far under what similar cars are advertised at. Occasionally that is a genuine bargain, such as a motivated seller, but it is also the classic sign of a scam, an undisclosed write-off or clocked mileage. Never pay a deposit for a car you have not seen, and always ask for the history.
Will the seller accept less than the asking price?+
The tool cannot tell. Many sellers negotiate, and private sellers sometimes price above dealers. If the price is above the range, use the range and the similar cars as your reason to ask for less.
Why can it not find my car?+
It needs enough similar cars to compare. Rare models and unusual specifications have too few matches. Try a more common model, or leave the fuel and gearbox on Any.
