What is the Ford EcoBoost "wet belt" issue?
The 1.0 EcoBoost (and later 1.5 EcoBlue) uses a rubber timing belt that runs in engine oil — a "wet belt" design. Over time the belt sheds rubber particles into the oil, clogging the oil pump pickup and starving the engine of lubrication. Failure mode is catastrophic — total engine destruction. Ford originally claimed a 150,000-mile life but informally accepts failures at 60,000–80,000 miles. A precautionary belt change at 80,000 km is the standard advice. Is the Ford PowerShift gearbox safe to buy used?
