Toyota Auris / Avensis / RAV4 with BMW 1.6 / 2.0 D-4D diesel (2015–2018)
Toyota's only major engine misstep — sourced from BMW (N47/B47). Timing chain snaps and oil burning widely reported. Walk away from this engine entirely. Petrol/hybrid Auris of the same era is fine.
Toyota Auris Hybrid / Prius (2010–2014)
IPM boost converter software fault on the hybrid inverter. CCPC recall affected 589 vehicles in Ireland. Remedy was a free software update to Motor Generator + Power Management ECUs. Confirm recall completion via VIN.
Toyota Yaris (2010–2012)
Brake pipe corrosion — 31–36% MOT/NCT failure rate in UK data, primarily from corroded rear brake pipes. Largely resolved from 2013 onwards.

Toyota is above average at NCT — clusters in the top quartile of pass rates. Yaris 2010–2012 has historical brake-pipe corrosion as the single biggest issue (largely resolved post-2013). Otherwise Auris/Corolla brake wear is typically even, headlight aim rarely an issue, and tyre wear is the main NCT concern (as with any brand). Toyota hybrids almost never fail NCT on emissions.

Toyota's standard hybrid battery warranty is 5 years / 100,000 km — but if the previous owner brought the car to an authorised Toyota dealer for a Hybrid Health Check (€60–€120) every year, the warranty extends by one year each time, up to 15 years total with no mileage cap. A 2018 Corolla Hybrid with a documented annual Hybrid Health Check stamp can have full battery cover until 2033. A 2018 Corolla Hybrid without one has zero battery cover today. Always ask for the Hybrid Health Check history — it's the difference between a €25,000 used car and a €2,500 battery replacement bill.
